Removals to Sicily from the UK

The whole peninsula, then a ferry

A move to Sicily is the longest single job on our Italian book: the Channel, France, the Alps, the whole length of Italy, and then a ferry across the Strait of Messina. It is entirely routine and it is not a move to arrange in a hurry.

Once on the island, the destinations vary enormously. Palermo and Catania are dense cities. Taormina is a hill town with the access to match. The interior is farmhouses on tracks, and the south-east is baroque towns with narrow streets.

Leg one

By road through Italy

Leg two

A booked sailing with the vehicle

Leg three

By road from the port to the door

The arrival leg

Down the A1 and the A3 to Villa San Giovanni, across to Messina by ferry, then the A20 west for Palermo or the A18 south for Taormina, Catania and Siracusa.

Access

What shapes a delivery to Sicily

The Messina crossing

A short, frequent ferry, but it is a booked sailing with a vehicle on it, so it sets the timetable for the last leg rather than fitting around it.

City deliveries

Palermo's historic quarters and Catania's centre are dense, with narrow streets and tall buildings. Shuttles and larger crews are normal. The modern districts and the coastal towns are ordinary deliveries.

Hill towns and the interior

Taormina, Ragusa Ibla, Modica and the inland towns are stepped and steep. The interior is tracks and gates. Both are workable and both want photographs of the final approach.

Plan it earlier than a mainland move

The distance, the ferry and the consolidation all mean a Sicilian booking wants more notice than a move to Milan. Start the conversation as soon as the property is agreed rather than when the keys are.

Who moves to Sicily

Retirements to the south-east and the coast, restoration buyers in the baroque towns, and a steady number of people who have found that a life in Sicily and a remote job are compatible in a way they were not a decade ago.

Before Sicily, there is the rest of the journey

Everything up to the Italian border is the same for every destination on this site: collection at your UK address, export packing, the Channel crossing and the run through France. The route page sets that out in full, including which Alpine crossing suits which part of Italy.

The paperwork is the same too — a customs declaration, a detailed inventory and Transfer of Residence relief on your own used belongings. That is covered on the customs page. France appears on this site only as transit; if France is your destination rather than your motorway, our sister site france-removals.co.uk covers that corridor.

Moving to Sicily — your questions

How do our belongings get to Sicily?

By road the whole way, then across the Strait of Messina on a ferry with the vehicle. Nothing is unloaded and reloaded at the crossing — the same vehicle and the same crew continue to your address.

Is a Sicilian move much dearer than a northern Italian one?

It is longer, and distance is one of the things a quote is built from. The bigger variable is usually the delivery access at the far end — a ground-floor house near Siracusa and a fourth floor in central Palermo are very different afternoons.

Can you deliver to Taormina?

Yes. It is a hill town with narrow stepped streets, so a small-vehicle transfer and a carry are normal. We establish the standing point in advance.

Getting a quote for Sicily

Send the UK address, the Italian one and a rough room list. The access at the far end shapes the quote more than the distance does.
