A small medieval centre and a large permit problem
Florence has the tightest historic centre of any Italian city we deliver into regularly. The streets inside the old walls were laid out for people on foot and have not grown since, and the traffic restrictions are among the strictest in the country.
None of that makes a move impossible. It makes it a job that has to be planned in a particular order: permit first, vehicle second, everything else after.
The Florence zone is camera-enforced with limited entry windows and a permit process that does not reward last-minute applications. We start it as soon as the move is booked.
In San Niccolò, Santo Spirito and the streets behind the Duomo, a full-size removal vehicle is simply not going down them. A small-van shuttle from a legal standing point is the standard method, and it is priced in from the start.
Renaissance and nineteenth-century buildings in the centre often have several flights of stone stairs and no lift at all. Crew size goes up accordingly, and some pieces genuinely will not make the turn.
The arrival leg
Off the A1 at Firenze Nord or Firenze Sud onto the viali, the ring of boulevards that traces the old walls. Almost everything inside that ring is restricted; almost everything outside it is a normal delivery.
A mix that has not changed much in decades: academics and people attached to the art world, retirees who fell for the city and came back, and a steady number of families moving out to the hills above it.
People often assume they want the centre and then buy in Fiesole, Bagno a Ripoli or the Chianti hills instead. Those are much easier deliveries — a track and a gate rather than a permit and a shuttle. If you are still choosing, it is worth knowing which is which.
Everything up to the Italian border is the same for every destination on this site: collection at your UK address, export packing, the Channel crossing and the run through France. The route page sets that out in full, including which Alpine crossing suits which part of Italy.
The paperwork is the same too — a customs declaration, a detailed inventory and Transfer of Residence relief on your own used belongings. That is covered on the customs page. France appears on this site only as transit; if France is your destination rather than your motorway, our sister site france-removals.co.uk covers that corridor.
As early as possible. The Florence process is not one to leave late, and we start it the moment the move is booked. Where a permit is not granted, we shuttle in with a small vehicle from a legal standing point instead.
Sometimes, and sometimes not. A stone staircase that turns twice in a fourteenth-century building has limits. We measure at survey and tell you honestly, including when a window lift is the only route and whether the building would permit one.
Considerably, in access terms. Tracks, gates and gradients are their own problem, but they are a problem we can look at on satellite rather than one that needs a municipal permit.
Send the UK address, the Italian one and a rough room list. The access at the far end shapes the quote more than the distance does.
