Moving to Italy,
handled properly

We move households from the United Kingdom to Italy and nowhere else. Rome, Milan, Florence, a farmhouse in the Val d'Orcia or a flat above a Venetian canal — one corridor, driven end to end, with the paperwork done before you travel.

  • Full loads and part loads, UK to Italy
  • Careful export packing and a numbered inventory
  • Customs and Transfer of Residence relief handled

The process

Moving from the UK to Italy

One corridor, five stages, and no part of it improvised. This is what happens between the first phone call and the last box being carried into a room in Italy.

  1. One

    Survey and plan

We look at what is going, how it comes out of the UK property, and — just as importantly — how it gets into the Italian one. A video walk-round covers most jobs. What comes out of it is a written scope and an inventory, not an estimate.

  2. Two

    Export packing

Packing for an international road move is a different standard from a local one. Everything is wrapped for the distance, furniture is blanketed and corner-protected, glass and pictures go into purpose-made cases, and every item is numbered against the inventory as it goes on.

  3. Three

    Full load or part load

A full house usually takes a dedicated vehicle that leaves when you are ready. A flat, a part-furnished property or a second home is often better as a part load sharing the route with other Italy-bound moves — less cost, less flexibility on dates. We price both.

  4. Four

    The paperwork

Since Brexit a household move into Italy is a customs import. We prepare the declaration and lodge it, and we tell you exactly which personal documents to obtain. Transfer of Residence relief is the mechanism that keeps duty off your own used belongings — it depends on the paperwork being right.

  5. Five

    The drive, then the delivery

Down to the Channel, across, through France, and into Italy by whichever Alpine crossing suits the destination and the season. At the other end we deliver into the property, position the furniture, reassemble what we dismantled and take the packaging away.

Four ways into Italy

Which crossing a load uses depends on where in Italy it is going and what the weather is doing. Every winter booking has the coast route planned as a fallback.

Fréjus tunnel — into Piedmont, Turin and the A32
The workhorse crossing for anything heading to Turin, Milan or down the A1 towards Florence and Rome.
Mont Blanc tunnel — into The Aosta valley and the A5 to Milan
Shorter for Lombardy and the lakes. Height and load restrictions are stricter here than at Fréjus.
The Brenner Pass — into Alto Adige, Verona and the Veneto
The route of choice for Venice and the north-east. It is a pass rather than a tunnel, so winter conditions matter.
The Ligurian coast — into Genoa and the whole west coast
No mountains at all. Longer, but never closed for snow, so it is the planned fallback on every winter load.

Customs

What Brexit actually changed

Your belongings are now an import when they enter Italy. That means a declaration, a detailed inventory, your codice fiscale, and evidence that you are transferring your residence rather than bringing goods in to sell.

Done correctly, Transfer of Residence relief means no duty on your own used household goods. Done loosely — a vague inventory, a missing document — it means questions at a border with your furniture on the wrong side of it.

We prepare and lodge the declaration. We do not quote clearance times, because that decision belongs to the authorities rather than to us.

Customs and ToR relief

Plain dealing

Three things you will not find here

No figures

You will not find a statistic on this site

No percentages, no counts of moves completed, no years in business. Those are easy to type and impossible for you to check, and a firm asking to drive your belongings across a continent should start by not printing things it cannot stand behind.

No stars

And no review scores until they are real

When there are genuine reviews from people we have actually moved to Italy, they will appear here with somewhere you can go and read them. Until then, nothing.

No guesses

And no price before somebody has looked

A UK to Italy move quoted from a web form is a number that gets revised later, usually when you have committed and cannot easily refuse. We survey, then we quote, and the written figure is the figure.

The questions we get first

More on the FAQ page — the crossings, the inventory, storage, antiques and what cannot travel.

Do you move to anywhere other than Italy?

No, and that is deliberate. This is a single-corridor firm: households from the United Kingdom to Italy. Knowing one route properly — the crossings, the Italian customs process, what a Florence permit takes, which villages need a shuttle — is worth more to you than a list of twenty countries. If you are moving to France, our sister site france-removals.co.uk covers that corridor.

Full load or part load — which do I need?

A full house usually takes a dedicated vehicle that leaves when you are ready and drives straight there. A flat, a part-furnished property or a second home is often better as a part load sharing the route with other Italy-bound moves: less cost, less flexibility on dates. We price both so the trade-off is visible rather than assumed.

What does Italian customs need from me?

A detailed inventory with values, your codice fiscale, evidence of your Italian residence or your application for it, identification, and a declaration that the goods are used personal effects moving with your change of residence. We prepare and lodge the declaration; you obtain the personal documents, and we tell you exactly what each one looks like.

Will I pay duty on my own furniture?

Normally not. Transfer of Residence relief exists precisely so that people moving their lives are not taxed on their own used belongings. It depends entirely on the paperwork being right and consistent with what is actually on the vehicle, which is why our inventory is written at survey rather than assembled afterwards.

Do you collect from anywhere in the UK?

Yes. There is no base town and no collection radius here — London most weeks, and Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Bristol regularly. Once the vehicle is heading for the Channel the rest of the journey is identical wherever it started.

Tell us where in Italy you are going

Both addresses and a rough idea of what is coming. We will arrange a survey, work out the crossing and set out what the customs paperwork needs.
