Removals to the Amalfi Coast from the UK
The SS163, and the stairs at the end of it
The arrival leg
Down the A3 to Vietri or over the hill from Sorrento, then onto the SS163. Large vehicles are restricted on parts of the coast road in season, so the final leg is normally a transfer to a small van at a point we identify in advance.
The Amalfi Coast is the most demanding road delivery in Italy, and there is no point pretending otherwise. The SS163 is carved into a cliff, it is narrow, it has hairpins with a mirror instead of a sightline, and in the season it is full of coaches.
Beyond the road, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello and the villages between them are built as staircases. Almost no property here is reached by a vehicle at the door.
What the last mile does to a vehicle
- The transfer point
- Almost every Amalfi delivery involves changing vehicle. We establish where that happens, what fits beyond it, and how far the carry is from there. That is the single most important thing to know before quoting.
- Steps, and then more steps
- A Positano address measured in flights rather than metres is normal. Some properties have a private lift or a monorail up the hillside; most do not. We ask for photographs of the approach and count.
- Season restrictions
- Vehicle restrictions on the coast road tighten sharply in summer, and the traffic makes even permitted movements slow. A move outside the high season is a different and far better day.
Who moves to the Amalfi Coast
Second homes, mostly, and a smaller number of permanent moves — often people who have been visiting for years and know exactly what the stairs involve.
Before the Amalfi Coast, there is the rest of the journey
Everything up to the Italian border is the same for every destination on this site: collection at your UK address, export packing, the Channel crossing and the run through France. The route page sets that out in full, including which Alpine crossing suits which part of Italy.
The paperwork is the same too — a customs declaration, a detailed inventory and Transfer of Residence relief on your own used belongings. That is covered on the customs page. France appears on this site only as transit; if France is your destination rather than your motorway, our sister site france-removals.co.uk covers that corridor.
Moving to the Amalfi Coast — your questions
Can a removal lorry reach my Positano house?
Almost certainly not. The coast road restricts large vehicles and the properties are reached by steps. We transfer to a small van at a point established in advance and carry from there — that is how everything arrives here, including the furniture shops' deliveries.
How many steps is too many?
None, in the sense that we will do it. But the number changes the crew and the time, so it changes the quote. Photographs of the approach are worth more here than anywhere else in Italy.
When should we avoid moving?
High summer. The road restrictions are tightest and the traffic is at its worst. Spring and autumn are markedly easier and we will push you towards them if your dates allow.
Getting a quote for the Amalfi Coast
Send the UK address, the Italian one and a rough room list. The access at the far end shapes the quote more than the distance does.
