Removals to Lake Como from the UK
A lake road with no passing places and a lot of steps
The arrival leg
Off the A9 at Como or the A4 and up the eastern shore. From there it is the SS340 on the west side or the SS583 and SS36 on the east — narrow, busy, and with almost nowhere for a large vehicle to stop.
Lake Como is one of the more demanding deliveries in northern Italy, and the reason is geography rather than distance. The lake is steep-sided, the roads run along it in a single lane each way, and a very large number of properties sit either well above the road or well below it, connected by steps.
A move here is usually three legs: the motorway, the lake road, and then a carry that has nothing to do with vehicles at all.
What the last mile does to a vehicle
- Stopping is the hard part
- The lake roads have very few places a removal vehicle can legally and safely stand. We identify one in advance for your address, and sometimes it is not directly outside the house.
- Steps up, or steps down
- Villas above the road mean a climb; properties on the water mean a descent, often with a gate and a garden path between. Either way the carry is on foot and the crew is sized for the number of steps, which we establish from photographs.
- Boat access, occasionally
- A handful of lakeside properties are genuinely easier to reach from the water. Where that is the case we arrange it locally, and it is planned into the schedule rather than improvised.
Who moves to Lake Como
Second-home owners furnishing a lakeside apartment, retirees making a permanent move to Menaggio, Bellagio or Varenna, and professionals working in Milan or Lugano who have decided the commute is worth the view.
Before Lake Como, there is the rest of the journey
Everything up to the Italian border is the same for every destination on this site: collection at your UK address, export packing, the Channel crossing and the run through France. The route page sets that out in full, including which Alpine crossing suits which part of Italy.
The paperwork is the same too — a customs declaration, a detailed inventory and Transfer of Residence relief on your own used belongings. That is covered on the customs page. France appears on this site only as transit; if France is your destination rather than your motorway, our sister site france-removals.co.uk covers that corridor.
Moving to Lake Como — your questions
Can you get a vehicle to a lakeside villa?
To a standing point near it, usually. To the door, frequently not — the roads are narrow and many properties are reached by steps. We establish the standing point and the number of steps before quoting.
Do you use boats?
For a small number of properties where the water is genuinely the better route, yes, arranged with a local operator. It is planned into the schedule rather than decided on the day.
Is the eastern shore easier than the western?
Marginally, in places — the SS36 carries more of the through traffic in a tunnel, which takes pressure off the lake road. But the access at the property itself matters far more than which shore it is on.

Send the UK address, the Italian one and a rough room list. The access at the far end shapes the quote more than the distance does.
